Preventive and Clinical Health Maintenance

Preventive and Clinical Health Maintenance

The word health pertains to a condition of full physical and emotional well-being. Health is important for all individuals, regardless of age, race, gender, or social standing. Health care exists to assist individuals in maintaining this optimum state of health. A good example of health is the condition of acceptable cholesterol levels in the body. People with good health are not at risk for heart attack or stroke.

Many determinants contribute to health or disease, and these determinants are also grouped into three different categories. These include genetic determinants, environmental factors, and social factors. The genetic determinants include the genetic architecture of an individual; for example, the genes passed down from parents to children. These determinants cannot be changed, and therefore they are considered part of the genetic makeup. Environmental factors include the elements in the environment.

An example of an environmental factor affecting health status includes smoking cigarettes or using other tobacco products. Psychological factors include individual behavior. For example, if an individual consistently smokes cigarettes after smoking a single cigar in the past, this person is considered to have developed nicotine addiction which can significantly affect his health status. Socially, people with low health status are more likely to engage in risky behaviors such as drinking alcohol and engaging in unprotected sex.

Another example of individual behavior that can have an impact on health is unhealthy eating habits. A diet that is too high in saturated fat and low in fiber can be very detrimental to health. In addition to being ill, it can also cause many diseases and lead to heart disease complications. Unhealthy eating habits resulting from social norms also become a significant factor in the rising rate of heart disease in the US.

The lack of physical activity has become a serious threat to the health of individuals living in developed countries. It has been determined that sedentary lifestyle choices such as sitting at one’s desk all day without participating in social activities are responsible for many health problems. Moreover, a sedentary lifestyle is related to several kinds of cancer. For instance, tobacco consumption is a major cause of lung cancer and other kinds of cancers affecting the chest, stomach, and colon. Furthermore, unhealthy lifestyle choices such as excessive alcohol consumption and smoking are related to type 2 diabetes. In developed countries, physical well-being has become a major concern for the increasing number of individuals suffering from various health problems.

A healthy lifestyle choice can help prevent many chronic diseases. Examples of lifestyle choices that can help prevent chronic diseases include regular exercise. Exercise helps you keep your weight in check, maintain good body weight, and maintain a healthy body fat ratio. It also reduces the risk of developing cardiovascular, respiratory, and kidney diseases. Besides, regular exercise can also reduce the risk of developing communicable diseases such as hepatitis B, shingles, HIV, hepatitis C, meningitis, and cervical cancer.

Stress management is another effective health practice that helps you to keep your weight in check, improves your well-being, and prevents the development of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and certain forms of cancer. Therefore, you need to learn to manage your stress levels. Meditation and yoga can be helpful techniques to cope with stress. Biofeedback and acupressure are other practices that help to reduce stress. As a result of these practices, stress can be effectively managed, and it can also contribute to the prevention of various kinds of chronic diseases.

Good physical health is not only influenced by external factors; it is also affected by internal factors. Therefore, maintaining good health requires you to address both internal and external threats. This can be achieved by combining healthy lifestyle choices, which can be described as comprehensive wellness. Therefore, maintain a holistic balance between the two by incorporating dietary changes, regular physical activity, and adequate sleep.
